WHY SHOULD YOU SEE PERGAMON AND IZMIR?
The Ancient City of Pergamon, one of the most important cultural centers of the Hellenistic period, bears the traces of the Hellenistic period, especially in its libraries, temples, streets, waterways, fountains and cisterns, trade centers, theater and social areas. We recommend anyone interested in the Hellenistic Period to visit the Ancient City of Pergamon. Also Pergamon was the home of Dr.Galen the founder of pharmacology. The Serapis Temple was converted into a church and was one of the first of the Severn Churches mentioned in the Bible. Pergamon is “throne of Satan,” referred to by St.John in the Book of Revelations.
CONCEPT OF THE TOUR
We initiate our tour at the Izmir Clock Tower, constructed in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ottoman Sultan II. Abdulhamid’s throne ascension. Subsequently, we’ll proceed to the area known as the ‘’Elevator’’, passing through Dario Moreno street, named after Dario Moreno, an Izmir lover and artist of Jewish origin. Our subsequent destination is Kemeraltı Bazaar, which took shape through coastal land reclamation and establishment of new residential and commercial zones between 1650-1670.
Additionally, it stands as a bustling district and bazaar thriving with commercial activities. Our journey will then lead us to the Agora of Izmir, an additional historical gem. Having its roots in the 4th century BC, this Agora was reconstructed with support from the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius following the earthquake in 178 AD. Our final halt is Kadıfekale, also a site of historical importance. We will then traverse the Pergamon Ancient City, which gained UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2014. Uponward, our itinerary concludes with visits to the Pergamon Museum and the Asklepeion, followed by our return voyage.
