WHY SHOULD YOU SEE IZMIR AND EPHESUS?
Among the original Hellenistic city-states along Asia Minor’s Aegean coast, only Smyrna (modern-day Izmir) has survived the region’s catastrophes. It’s believed that Homer, author of the Iliad and Odyssey, lived in this region. The Historical Elevator is a must-visit attraction in Izmir. Additionally, the Beth-Israel Synagogue is significant for Jews, and the Saint Polycarpe Church is important for Christians.
Ephesus stands as one of Turkey’s top destinations with its renowned ruins, including the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Ephesus is one of the First Seven Churches of Christianity mentioned in the Bible and boasts the best-preserved ancient Greek-Roman city in Turkey. The Vatican declared the House of Virgin Mary a place of pilgrimage in 1961.
DAY1: Izmir Center Tour
You will be picked up from the hotel or pick-up point at 05:00 in the morning and we will set off for the airport. You will travel from Istanbul to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport with 07:00 flight. After landing at Izmir Adnan Menderes airport, our transfer staff will meet you. Then, you will start your journey to the places we will visit.
We start this tour with the Beth-Israel Synagogue, which was started to be built in 1905 with the edict of Sultan Abdülhamid II in Karataş district of Izmir and opened in 1907. This synagogue is the largest synagogue in Izmir. Then we will pass through Dario Moreno street, named after Dario Moreno, a Jewish Izmir lover and artist of Jewish origin, and go to the place called “Elevator”. Our next stop is Havra Street, where the small synagogues are located. Some of the synagogues on this street are 400 years old.
This place is close to the historical Kemeraltı Bazaar and there is a passage from Havra Street to Kemeraltı Bazaar. We will visit Izmir Agora, another historical place. Founded in the 4th century BC, the Agora was rebuilt with the support of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius after the earthquake in 178 AD. Our last stop in Izmir is Kadifekale, which is also a historical place.
We end our tour around 17:00 and set off for the hotel where you will spend the evening in Kusadasi.
DAY2: Ephesus Tour
We will pick you up from the hotel around 9am and our Ephesus Tour will begin. We will pass through the lush and picturesque countryside before arriving at our first stop, the House of Virgin Mary. Then we reach the House of Virgin Mary. It is known that St John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus 4 or 6 years after the death of Jesus.
Secondly, after the House of Virgin Mary we will go to our next destination, the Ancient City of Ephesus; the tour here will be a walking tour and will take you to one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the whole world. You will be able to see the Odeon, the Fountain of Trajan, the Scholastic steam baths, the Temple of Hadrian and of course let’s not forget the very impressive library of Ephesus.
The library is decorated with columns and statues. The Great Theatre, where St Paul preached, is the largest of antiquity with a capacity of 24,000 seats. Then we will pass through the Arcadian Way, where Mark Anthony and Cleopatra once paraded.
Finally, we will continue our tour and head to our next stop, the Temple of Artemis (Diana), this extraordinary temple was built in honour of the Greek Goddess of hunting, wildlife and fertility, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The Temple of Artemis was the largest marble temple in the ancient Greek world as it was four times larger than the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
When our tour named Private Izmir and Ephesus Tours is completed, we will transfer you to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport to fly to Istanbul and then take you to the hotel in Istanbul by private transfer.
